Frequently Asked Questions

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that has been used for thousands of years to promote general wellness and healing. During treatment, needles are placed in specific points. This stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

Sterile and incredibly thin, acupuncture needles come in varying lengths and sizes; the specifics of the needles utilized in your treatment depend on your condition and which acupuncture points are targeted.

Acupuncture needles are very thin and are typically inserted just one to three millimeters into the body. While they are being placed, some people feel nothing. Others report minimal discomfort. During treatment, you may feel nothing at all. Alternately, you may experience sensations like warmth or tingling as the energy balances out.

The number of treatments needed varies from patient to patient. Factors that influence how many treatments are required include the condition being treated, its severity and duration, your overall health, and your personal health goals. The number of acupuncture treatments you will need begins with an initial consultation and examination with our acupuncturists. As a general rule, many patients notice that the symptoms of their condition begin to improve within three to ten treatments. While the symptoms may decrease during your first few appointments, additional visits may be necessary to alleviate the cause of the condition.

For your first visit, you can expect a review of your medical history and a thorough exam. Our acupuncturists will assess your complaint, diagnose the problem from a Chinese medical perspective and discuss a treatment plan with you. Treatments will begin on that first visit.

Everyone responds differently to acupuncture, so the exact timing depends on your body’s needs. The insertion of the needles typically happens fairly quickly. Once the needles are in place, you can simply relax while they draw in energy. After 10 to 40 minutes, the needles are removed.

Acupuncture points can be found on both the front and back of the body. If points on your front are being targeted, you will be asked to rest on your back. When needles are inserted in the back, you will be asked to lie on your stomach. Sometimes only one side of the body is treated. On occasions when both the front and back are to be treated, there will be two rounds of treatment.

Acupuncture is simply one facet of the total care offered at Dragonfly Wellness Center. Our acupuncturists will discuss any additional recommended services during your assessment. Their suggestions may include, but are not limited to, chiropractic, massage, nutrition and dietary advice, stetches, exercise, cupping, and massage.

Some insurance and health plans cover acupuncture. However, the patient is responsible for investigating and filing insurance on their own. Payment is required by Dragonfly Wellness Center at the time of service, and we will provide receipts for you to file with your insurance provider.
